The record
Seasons
Nothing is retired when a season ends. Each one keeps its own address and its own final figures, so a season can be read years later exactly as it closed.

How to read the archive
A closed season is a snapshot of how the numbers stood when it ended. The ratings on it were true that day and are not adjusted afterwards, so a player's page and their row in an old season will say different things about them. That is the point of keeping both.
Elo is the number that carries. It measures a player's level rather than counting what they scored, so a rating at the close of one season is the rating the next season opens on, and comparing the two is the closest the site comes to measuring a summer. The z-score does not carry: it compares points per game inside one season only, so it can be read across seasons as a standing but never as a level.
Team of the Year appears on a season only once it has finished, because it is picked on points scored across the whole of it. No page on the live site shows one.
Player profiles are the other way of reading the same record. A profile lives at a permanent address and accumulates the seasons a player has played, so it follows one footballer through time where a season page holds one year of everybody.
